Outdoor Education
The Outdoor Education Program at Scots encourages self reliance, interdependence and leadership. It fosters the development of an adventurous spirit, and provides experience in managing personal risks and enjoying safe journeys in nature that prepare our students for the world outside school.
Our camp program enables students to travel to new environments where they will be faced with challenges they will need to overcome either as a group or as individuals. There are many traits we foster in students in everyday school life, such as resilience, compassion, resourcefulness, creativity, curiosity and inclusiveness. On these programs, students are given the chance to explore and develop these traits in a positive and supported environment. They learn to tackle and overcome the challenges each program will present and they can transfer these skills out of the bush and back into their school and personal lives.
Outdoor Education offers all Scots students opportunities to grow and foster:
- Personal strengths through rich outdoor experiential learning opportunities that are purposefully and sequentially designed to develop each student holistically.
- Leadership styles (of self and others), practices and strategies that can be used successfully, individually or in a group at school and beyond.
- Develop confidence and learn the value of co-operative and collaborative effort and endeavour.
- The value of our natural environment firsthand in the ranges, rivers and valleys of North Eastern Victoria and the NSW Alps that we consider as Scots ‘backyard’.
- The benefit of healthy eating and exercise, and a skillset to access activities and locations in their future endeavours, for their own lifelong adventure and wellbeing.
- An expanded worldview without the distraction and intrusion of mobile phones, game consoles, the internet and television.
- Perseverance and resilience in the face of discomfort and adversity, such as fatigue and poor weather and challenging activities.
- Increased confidence, knowing that they have overcome some significant obstacles and personal challenges and are now better prepared to take on those ahead in schooling and beyond.
Snowsports
Geographically close to many of Australia’s ski-fields, the school is pleased to offer an extensive snowsports program to students across Year 3 to Year 12. Annual Snow Days are offered to interested students providing the opportunity to ski or snowboard with their peers and teachers. Our Falls Creek Day Trips are open to students of all ability levels. No experience is necessary. Some trips are scheduled to run during the school week, allowing a richer and less crowded experience.
There is further opportunity for students to join competition teams as part of the Australian Secondary Schools Snowsports Team Championship (ASSSTC) and Victorian Interschools competitions. These are for more experienced skiers, run with the guidance of our school’s Snowsports Coordinator.
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework for non-formal education and learning, which challenges young people to discover their potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world. The Award has a long history at The Scots School Albury, providing the opportunity for students from Year 9 to Year 12 to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure. The Award is comprised of three levels (Bronze, Silver or Gold) and four sections (Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Service and Adventurous Journey). Participants complete all four sections at each level in order to achieve their Award, with the guidance of staff every step of the way. A number of expeditions are arranged throughout the school year, with many students completing the full award in their time with the school.
